Lucian Matis may be quite familiar to Canadian fashionistas. His familiarity comes with being a runner-up on Project Runway Canada, along with dressing Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau (Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s wife).
Matis was born in Romania and immigrated to Canada where he later attended Ryerson University in Toronto to study Fashion. Matis’ exposure to fashion came at an early age. His mother had a tailor shop, which introduced him to the intricate hand techniques that are found in his designs today.
Matis launched his collection in 2007 at Toronto Fashion Week, and since then his brand has taken off. His SS16 collection was awarded “Best Collection at Toronto Fashion Week” by Toronto Magazine. That is not the only place you can find his work. He is featured online and in print in a number of publications including Elle Canada, The National Post, and WWD.
Matis was launched to national and international recognition when Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau wore two of his dresses at the White House for her first official visit. In an interview with Toronto Life, Matis reveals that when he was contacted by Jessica Mulroney (Gregoire-Trudeau’s stylist) he was not aware that the garments were for the White House. Since then, Matis has received an overwhelming amount of requests for the two dresses worn that day. He describes this experience in his Toronto Life interview:
It feels a little bit surreal. We knew Sophie would be wearing our gown during the evening, but we didn’t know she would also wear one of our dresses during the day. We were taken by surprise. I woke this morning to being on the cover of Metro. The day before we were on the cover of the Star. And then we were being talked about in the New York Times. At one point there were four news trucks parked outside our offices. Our landlord came over to see what was going on. He thought there had been a crime.
I remember seeing the evening dress and immediately loving the jewel tones and commending Gregoire-Trudeau’s impeccable taste.
Lucian Matis debuted his SS17 colletion at at FashionCan held by Yorkdale. Matis presented a collection with a punch of colour that are feminine and glamorous and perfect for the season.
Matis is nominated for Womenswear Designer of the Year. Congratulations Lucian Matis!
